Getting up in the morning after a brief night rest as a result of the long hours on the roads coupled with the busy work schedule. This Trend continues, although it’s never the same every day; while some days it gets worse, other days it becomes better. This Post by Quest Compass gives an overview of the awful Trip experience from Lagos mainland to island on every weekday especially if you are searching for handy information about what you’ll likely encounter if you’ve decided in Working/living in Lagos.

Living on the Islands for Close to a month has been quite interesting but the thought of moving around Lagos from one point to another in Public transport has become sort of an Adventure.  It’s similar to going on a hike or Mountaineering, in a nutshell, there’s got to be some entertaining Huddles and obstacles.

For a Person who has not known his/her way around Lagos Island quite well, going from a place like Badore to Ajah won’t be much of a problem due to the fact that where ever you’re standing along the road, you will get a tricycle (Popularly called Marwa) to carry you. Depending on your point of origin, you’ll get to Ajah with as low as N100 and N150 (A quick rule of thumb: Any fee more than this means you’re being exploited). Although the Marwa drivers I’ve met so far have been quite honest, they won’t exploit you if you don’t know your way around.

MY TRIP EXPERIENCE: WHERE TO GET THE BUS

On arriving Ajah, you still need to open your ears wide enough to be able to hear the conductors so that you’ll know the right bus that’ll take you to your desired destination. On the other hand, if you just want to save yourself the stress of straining your ears because of the way the conductors pronounce the routes they are taking, you could ask around to know the right bus to enter.

So I finally got a bus going to Obalende from Ajah (Underbridge: this area seems to be a major bus stop), as I looked inside the 18 seater bus, two (2) passengers were already seated. So I entered, as the bus got moving, I thought it’ll be so comfortable to have just three (3) Passengers inside. Within a short time, the bus pulled over to carry more passengers. This continued until we got to Ikate Junction. Just before we got to Ikate junction, the bus driver hit another driver but of a smaller cab. This made the whole passengers on the bus get down

“I had to stay back because it was not my business; my major concern then was to reach my destination on time”.

But the reality is that you can’t choose your fate while on a trip in Lagos your fate chooses you. A little further, while the bus driver stopped to allow some passengers get down, just like when a farmer set a trap to catch some animals, there came a man in Yellow shirt and red Trouser (as though their Trap has caught a bush pig) telling him that he didn’t stop at the right Spot. This delayed our movement to the mainland for another 30 minutes; at this point, I just concluded that this Trip could take the whole day.  “I just couldn’t tell what went wrong at first was it that I came out from the house too soon or too late?”

However, after going through some Traffic, we finally approached the Third Mainland Bridge. It was a smooth drive as there was no Traffic.

MY AWFUL TRIP EXPERIENCE: FROM LAGOS MAINLAND TO ISLAND

Well, coming back to the Island was quite interesting and stressful. I could have just stayed back if I knew the journey would be so long. So I headed straight to Ogudu where I can get a bus going to Obalende directly. It wasn’t funny at all at this point; it was hell as the sun started as early as 7:00 am. Coupled with the fact that I wasn’t used to the Ogudu to Obalende route, I was just standing there; little did I know that about four (4) buses going to my direction had passed. I was already getting worried and tired standing at one point so I decided to help myself (by rushing inside the Bus) when I heard Obalende.

Just as you already know, it was Traffic time; coupled with the fact that a lot of persons would be on their way to their workplace. We met Traffic at Third Mainland Bridge at about 8:56 am but we later came out of the Traffic at about 9:10 am.

The kind of awful trip experience where you’ll have to check the time every 30 minutes to see if there are possibilities in getting to your destination early

At about 9:25 am we met traffic on approaching Obalende where I will be taking a bus going to Ajah. Obalende is a big and busy bus stop where you’ll get buses going to different locations in Lagos. “How much be Ajah” I heard someone ask… as at that time, we were made to pay N250. I didn’t argue because I was already getting an awful Trip experience. So we got moving, within a little distance further, the bus stopped to carry some more Passenger. A little further close to the British American Tobacco Company, along Kingsway road Ikoyi Lagos, we met traffic. But this time, it wasn’t as bad as the others we had experienced. “woooo” a feeling of relief as the road became free again while we approached Civic Center Towers.

At this Point, I became very alert to know if we’ve gotten to Ajah. But the reality of this awful trip experience was that at every bus stop, they kept calling for Passengers going to Ajah “I became so worried if we were ever going to reach Ajah anytime soon.

At about 10:45 am, got close to Chevron. At this point, I started hearing funny names like “Eleganzer”. In a nutshell, the distance between Lagos Mainland to Island is a little bit long; it’s straightforward too if it’s your first time taking the route.
